Programming for Impact

A review of the literature and lessons from the field on programming for vulnerable children

Susan Strasser, Marsha Treadwell, Julie Ideh

Programming for Impact

Working from a variety of disciplinary perspectives—including child development, child protection, and child health—this report examines CRS-supported programs for orphans and vulnerable children (OVC) in southern Africa that are models of good practice. Four programs are featured, focused on integration, accelerated learning, the use of a novel monitoring and evaluation tool, and drop-in centers within community-based OVC programming. Good practices in OVC care and support programming build on existing community assets, actively include adults and children, and are able to incorporate new ideas and structures to develop sustainable, replicable and community accepted approaches which improve vulnerable children’s wellbeing.
