CAFE Livelihoods underway in LACRO
Four LACRO country programs are now implementing Coffee Assistance for Enhanced Livelihoods (CAFE Livelihoods). The three-year, $8.2 million project is designed to help more than 7,000 smallholder farmers in El Salvador, Guatemala, Mexico and Nicaragua expand their participation in high-value coffee markets, with a special focus on “sustainable coffee” exports to the United States. The project works through 17 partners to deliver technical assistance in coffee production, post-harvest processing and marketing to more than 200 community-level farmer organizations. Two sustainability leaders in the coffee industry that have specialized in working with smallholder farmer enterprises are providing critical assistance in strengthening general and financial management skills of participating farmer organizations: non-profit financial services provider Root Capital and sustainable coffee importer Cooperative Coffees. LACRO is actively working to involve additional coffee chain stakeholders in the project through improved communication and coordination, as well as funding for complementary initiatives. The project is scheduled to conclude in September 2011.
