This publication highlights promising practices in increasing case detection and treatment rates as documented in the Maguindanao TB Control Project. It chronicles how community groups — Microscopy on Wheels (MOW), TB Clubs, Muslim Religious Leaders (MRLs) and Barangay Health Workers (BHWs) — have contributed to addressing the problem of TB. Health staff and others directly involved in the project also offer their insights and recommendations for mobilizing communities. Our experience demonstrates that even in conflict-ridden areas, there is enormous human potential that can be tapped to address the needs of TB-infected clients. The Magunidanao TB Control Project was a four-year partnership project for Catholic Relief Services and the Integrated Provincial Health Office, with funding assistance from the United States Agency for International Development and CRS private funds. It aimed to reduce TB stigma and TB morbidity and mortality through increased detection by upgrading health facilities and training health workers to become more responsive and effective at managing TB cases. On October 21 the project received the 2009 APM Project Management Award The International Relief and Development Project of the Year. The APM Project Management Awards is the largest independent professional body of its kind in Europe and has been recognizing world class project and program management for over 15 years and sees a total of 13 awards, including 2 brand new categories.
