Great Lakes Cassava Initiative Learning Event – Partnership for Success

Members of the Great Lakes Cassava Initiative (GLCI) field teams and CRS Headquarters celebrated the project’s achievement in disseminating clean cassava seed to 1,200,000 smallholder farmer households with a learning event. The event included an exciting combination of overview and multi-media displays, followed by a celebratory lunch.

This March 2012 conference in Rwanda will provide a space where solution providers, development practitioners, international donors and government agencies can come together and learn about successfully deployed solutions and sustainable business models with a focus on agriculture and health. We'll look at what we have learned to date about deploying ICT4D solutions in the field and consider best practices to measure the impact of ICT4D in programming.

Please join TOPS and the Learning Alliance for a day of learning and sharing on the topic of Local and Regional Procurement (LRP) food aid programs. The program will include an overview of recent USAID and USDA funded LRP projects and a presentation of findings from Cornell University’s analysis of Learning Alliance LRP activities. The program will also include breakout sessions to discuss food quality and market analysis concerns, how LRP can enhance emergency response, links with Title II programs, and the use of LRP as a disaster risk reduction strategy.

Publication launch: new CRS reports on economic strengthening efforts for adolescent girls

Catholic Relief Services launched two new assessment reports of economic strengthening activities for adolescent girls in Zimbabwe and Rwanda, funded by the Nike Foundation. The event took place in Washington, D.C., on May 25th, 2011.

In July 2010, the United Nations General Assembly declared that access to clean water and sanitation is a human right essential to the full enjoyment of life and all other human rights. Today more than 1 billion people worldwide lack access to safe drinking water. Moreover, scarcity and unequal access to water are major risk factors for violent conflict.

Non-governmental organizations held numerous consultations and workshops today in Vienna in the lead-up to AIDS 2010, a global conference scheduled to start Sunday July 18 in the Austrian capital. Speaking at a symposium on Children and HIV, the head of UNAIDS said universal access for children is about more than the ability to receive treatment. “It’s about social justice,” Michel Sidibe said in his keynote address. “I’m here because I want to be a part of a new movement that places children at the center of the [HIV and AIDS] agenda.”
