Protecting the dignity of the individual
CRS’ work in the cause of protecting human rights has involved it in issues such as human trafficking, gender equity, and children’s rights and involved the agency’s country programs throughout Europe, Africa, Asia, and Latin America, from Benin to Malawi and Madagascar, Cambodia to Bolivia and El Salvador.
Trafficking in human beings. CRS supports local, national and international counter-trafficking projects and networks, advocates with the media, and works with school systems to promote awareness of this problem. In Bosnia and Herzegovina CRS has worked closely with state agencies and other NGOs in an integrated program to bring trafficking prevention education to schools, improve assistance to victims, and establish a monitoring system.
Gender-based violence. In Malawi, CRS is supporting work to protect women and children from domestic violence and defend their inheritance rights. The program seeks to change cultural practices and values through workshops and advocacy activities for both victims and perpetrators, and to expose institutions that promote structural inequalities.
Promoting human rights. CRS supports advocacy efforts promoting the rights and dignity of migrant workers, conducts studies and policy analysis on the socioeconomic and cultural dimensions of the problem, and equips national institutions to better address issues such as exploitative child labor.
